California boasts the strongest public higher education system in the United States. The University of California system consists of 9 undergraduate campuses: Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, Davis, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Santa Cruz, Riverside, and Merced. The UC schools are are consistently ranked among the top 50 colleges in the United States, and UC Berkeley and UC Los Angeles in particular are often ranked in the top 10.
A single application, including essays, basic information, and supplements, can be sent to all of the UC schools you choose to apply to. They have a dedicated application system, found on the University of California website, and an earlier deadline than most other colleges, usually in November. Unlike many colleges, the UC system does not accept letters of recommendation. They do, however, require applicants to submit the scores of an ACT or SAT test with the application.

UC Personal Statement Prompts
The UC application requires students to answer two prompts in their application, which are shared across all schools in the UC system. Together, the two prompts have a 1,000 word limit, with the words being allocated as the student wishes. However, it is recommended that no response be less than 250 words. The two prompts for the 2015-2015 Application Cycle are:
1. Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
2. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
