Biology

"The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them."
                                 — William Lawrence Bragg

Sequoia Academy's biology courses are designed for advanced students with an interest in biology. These classes cover a plethora of topics introduced in high school biology courses, such as the scientific method, cell structures and functions, genetics, DNA replication, RNA transcription, proteins, organ systems, ecology, and more. We provide students with the tools and the comprehensive understanding of all of these topics needed to succeed in high school biology. Our courses cover the following biology subjects:
  • Introduction to Biology
  • Honors Biology
  • SAT Biology E/M
  • AP Biology

Introduction to Biology

Sequoia Academy offers summer programs for elementary and middle school students designed to spark their interest in science while introducing them to basic biology topics. Topics such as bacteria, blood types, and genetics are discussed. In addition to classroom learning students also get the opportunity to explore biology directly through hands-on demonstrations and labs.

Honors Biology

Sequoia Academy’s Honors Biology course is designed to cover the topics presented in high school honors biology classes. This is an introductory class and will help students develop a solid foundation in biology, and covers topics such as cell biology, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, ecology, and life processes. The fundamentals that the students will learn in this class will also prepare them for future coursework in SAT II Biology and AP Biology.

SAT II Biology

The SAT II Biology course at Sequoia Academy prepares students for both the SAT II Biology E and M tests. Both the Biology E and M tests have 80 multiple choice questions, and share a common core of topics, including cellular and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, structure and development of organisms, and evolution. The Biology E (Ecological) exam focuses on energy flow in an ecosystem, biological communities, and populations, while the Biology M (Molecular) exam concentrates on biochemistry, cellular structure, and cell processes such as photosynthesis and respiration. All of these topics will be covered in this course and students will be prepared to excel on both of the SAT II Biology exams.

AP Biology

Sequoia Academy’s AP Biology course will help students succeed in AP Biology courses, and prepare them for the AP Biology exam. Students will gain a deep understanding of biology, and be given the tools needed to excel in their AP Biology class. The course covers many advanced biological topics topics: evolution, cellular processes, energy and metabolism, intracellular and intercellular communication, genetics and information transfer, and interactions between biological systems.
