At Sequoia, we believe that a strong foundation in critical thinking and clear communication is a crucial part of our students’ development as conscientious, thoughtful individuals. As part of our English programs, we strive to inspire a lifelong passion of reading, a key to experiencing diverse perspectives and thinking with open minds.
English Workshops
Sequoia Academy offers several English workshops designed to help students target and improve particular English skills. Workshops run throughout the semester on topics such as essay structure, sentence composition, and critical reading, for students seeking to hone specific skills.
Introduction to Composition
Sequoia offers a two-week writing camp for Elementary and Middle School students seeking to improve their critical thinking and composition skills. During the two-week period, students practice all elements of the writing process- they brainstorm, draft, and edit -after receiving feedback-various types of persuasive and expository writing, including short stories, personal narratives, and plays. These are all gathered into a portfolio to take home at the end of the course.
ACT, SAT & SAT II English
Sequoia Academy offers comprehensive preparation for the English components of the ACT, PSAT, and SAT, as well as courses preparing students for the SAT Literature Subject Tests. The English sections of the ACT and SAT focus on critical reading and writing skills, and both tests contain essay components. The SAT II Literature exam tests students' knowledge of American and English literature, from Renaissance writers like Shakespeare to modern 20th century authors like Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
