Deciding which schools to apply to can be intimidating. One of the first steps in our college planning programs is helping students make that decision by considering different possible features of colleges. Do they want to attend a public or private school? In-state or out-of-state? Urban, small town, or rural? Small school or big school? Big research university or liberal arts college? All of these factors help narrow down which schools are a good fit for a particular student, based on the culture of the school and the personality of the individual student. We aim to always work with the motivations, goals, and interests of our students and find schools where each student will thrive, both in terms of having a fulfilling experience in the next four years and setting up a strong foundation for likely future career paths.
In addition to facets such as geography and size, the strengths of each school’s academics also play a critical role in determining the right college for each student. Is the school more focused on STEM or liberal arts? Does it have a strong program or research opportunities in the area the student is interested in? For example, is this school known for its strong pre-dental program, an interesting interdisciplinary neuroscience program or a unique research opportunity, or an excellent international relations department? Our counselors help students decide what major or career path to pursue based on their interests, activities, and future ambitions.
Our college consulting program at Sequoia helps students through the process of selecting colleges on the basis of these and other individual factors, such as what minors are available or if the school has extracurricular opportunities aligned with the interests of the student.
